Multidimensional Signal, Image, and Video Processing and Coding, Second Edition

Author: John W. Woods
Publisher: Academic Press
Publication date: 2011-03-15
ISBN: 0123814200
Pages: 608
Price: $99.95

This is a textbook intended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level courses on digital image and video processing, taught in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and information processing departments. It provides balanced coverage of the fundamental concepts and the cutting-edge technologies that are needed to develop practical applications, starting from basic digital signal processing principles and progressing to develop key concepts of multidimensional signal processing.

The book starts out with 2-D signal processing theory, including 2-D systems, partial difference equations, Fourier and Z-transforms, filter stability, discrete transforms such as DFT and DCT and their fast algorithms, and 2-D or spatial filter design. The second part covers image and video processing and coding. It begins with a chapter introducing basic image processing, and covers estimation/ restoration and source coding of both images and video, concluding with a chapter on network transmission of video including consideration of packet loss and joint source-network issues.

This book also has an enclosed CD-ROM that contains many short MATLAB programs that complement examples and exercises on MDSP. There are numerous short video clips showing applications in video processing and coding, plus a copy of the vidview video player for playing .yuv video files on a Windows PC and an illustration of effect of packet loss on H.264/AVC coded bitstreams.

No other resource for image and video processing contains the same breadth of up-to-date coverage; competing titles teach either multidimensional signal processing or video processing, but not both.

FEATURE: Expansion of the H.264/AVC standard, including Scalable Video Coding (SVC).

BENEFIT: This standard provides good video quality at substantially lower bit rates than previous standards, while enabling practical and economical designs. The H.264 video codec is highly flexible and has a very broad application range that covers all forms of digital compressed video from low bit-rate Internet streaming applications to Blu-Ray, HDTV broadcast and Digital Cinema applications with nearly lossless coding. With the use of H.264, bit rate savings of 50% or more are reported. The SVC extension was only completed in November 2007 so is relatively recent and not covered in most other sources.

FEATURE: New topic: summary of needed results from information theory. Introduces entropy, variable length coding, Huffman codes, arithmetic codes, and source and channel coding theorems.

BENEFIT: Several topics in image and video coding are based on the results of information theory, such as lossless data compression and coding. This offers major improvements in image resolution and clarity.

FEATURE: Solved examples and unsolved problems.

BENEFIT: Solved examples allow readers to see how sample problems are typically dealt with, while the unsolved exercises allow professors, students and engineers to get to grips with what they have just read and apply their newfound knowledge, thereby improving the learning process.

FEATURE: Includes coverage of network video coding.

BENEFIT: Network coding techniques allow improved performance and more innovative applications. None of the competing titles links network coding and video coding in this way.

wavelets for engineers (2003-01-25)

The marriage of signal processing and wavelets has spun off a host of exciting applications of math and algorithms. The use of wavelets outside of math itself is a recent sucess story. As a rule, it was an unexpected combination of ideas,-- as opposed to a single one, that generated the most powerful applications. The present very nice book is aimed at students taking a service course, for example electrical or optical engineers, but it has broader appeal as well. The authors start with basic principles from math, and move on to multicarrier communication systems..., and boundary value probems.

Dimensionality Reduction (Chapman & Hall/Crc Computer Science & Data Analysis)

Authors: Miguel A. Carreira-Perpinan
Publisher: Chapman & Hall/CRC
Publication date: 2011-02-26
ISBN: 1584886536
Pages: 320
Price: $79.95

Dimensionality reduction (DR) refers to the problem of projecting high-dimensional data onto a low-dimensional manifold so that relevant information is preserved. DR arises in many application areas where direct processing of the data is too costly. Through a machine-learning perspective that focuses on algorithms rather than theory, Dimensionality Reduction provides an overview of methods for DR including real-world applications taken from areas such as speech processing and computer vision. Interest in this area has exploded in recent years, making it a growing field of research. This book serves as the first reference for interested graduate students and researchers.

Pretty good instruction, it lacks in many areas. (2010-06-27)

Overall this book was helpful. I was not too enthusiastic about the delivery. I tried to do the tutorial and found it to be quite tedious; mainly because finding menus and other things on the new interface made it difficult.

Issues:
- First off the user interface for ZBrush has changed enough to make you have to look around for the appropriate menu or keys.
- Tutorial is difficult to follow.
- Movies on the disc are not as good as you can find out on the web for free.

It is not a terrible book it just needs to have an accompanying website that is updated that you can access if you purchase the book.

Summary:
This is not a HORRIBLE book, it just is showing its age. This is not entirely the authors/publishers fault. It might be because ZBrush has moved on and this static snapshot in time has not. If you can find it in a bargain bin somewhere grab it. It would make an OK backup source for your library.

Not bad, but dated (2010-06-13)

This is a good book if your trying to get into Zbrush. The only problem i have with it. is its a bit dated now. The UI has changed much with the coming of 3.5 R3. The macros presented in the book no longer work. apparently Pixologic has changed a few things in the scripting system. But overall the lessons can be followed along. I hope this book gets an updated zbrush 4 version.

Not sure what this people are reviewing (2010-01-17)

First, Zbrush moronic, confusing, non standard design is a nightmare for a newbie like myself. This book has nothing what this people are saying, some of the buttons the author wants you to press are hard to find. The author doesn't give directions as to where to find some of the stuff he wants to select. The book title was the reason why I bought it, I thought the author will treat me like and idiot and walk me right through creating something, instead I just got frustrated and shelf the book. That's my two cents, Thanks.

no sound on DVD movies tutorials (2009-12-11)

I bought this book yesterday and found it somewhat useful, but the books does not tell you how to get to the menus, it just tells you to open the tools, but does not tell you where to click to find them. Also the DVD that came with this books has movie tutorial on some chapters that do not have sound and the movie goes really fast. They are useless.

Wiley made good and replaced the badly bound book (2009-09-06)

Update: Wiley has replaced the book. Now I can read it. In case I can't update the star rating, 4 STARS!

Eric Keller's Introducing Zbrush is a useful and understandable text, going a long way towards making sense of Zbrush, a powerful program with a profoundly flawed user interface. The book is laid out in a sensible fashion (unlike the program it deals with) and the tutorials are helpful. I wish Kellar had not spent so much ink justifying many of the 2.5-D features of Zbrush which, as far as i can see, are a vestige of the program's legacy as a paint app, and are of limited, if any utility. Despite the text's usefulness, and the clarity of the illustrations, i must recommend you not buy this book! It just fell to pieces in my hand after having it just over a week. That's why the one star review. There's no excuse for this kind of shoddy product from the publisher, Sybex.

Update:
I Contacted Wiley regarding the book-binding problem. A replacement is on the way, but it was like pulling teeth:

[06:26:08 PM] Hi, my name is Arthur. How may I help you?
[06:27:31 PM] M Tyler: I have an issue with a book purchased new via Amazon.com. It fell apart in my hands after less than a week. It is virtually unusable.
[06:28:11 PM] Arthur: I am sorry you will have to contact Amazon regarding that issue
[06:28:45 PM] M Tyler: The author told me to contact the publisher. This is is not a shipping issue.
[06:29:22 PM] Arthur: what author?

[06:29:52 PM] M Tyler: Eric Keller, Author of Introducing ZBrush.
[06:31:40 PM] Arthur: There is nothing we can do to assist with your issue because the book was not directly purchased from us
[06:32:23 PM] M Tyler: Even if you did the book binding, which is what failed? That hardly seems reasonable.
[06:34:13 PM] Arthur: Ok please contact our customer card department regarding this issue: 1-877-762-2974
